Located in the Vung Ang Economic Zone in Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam, Formosa Ha Tinh Steel is the largest foreign-invested steel project in Vietnam and a core long-process integrated steel complex in Southeast Asia. It is jointly invested by Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group (majority shareholder), China Steel Corporation, and Japan's JFE Steel. The project officially commenced production in 2017, with its own deep-water port and captive power plant, and features a fully integrated production chain encompassing sintering, ironmaking, steelmaking, and hot rolling. Phase I has an annual crude steel capacity of 7.1 million tons, primarily producing hot-rolled coils, bars, and wires, as well as other core industrial steel products widely used in machinery manufacturing, containers, automobiles, pipelines, and other sectors. As a key local producer of hot-rolled flat products in Vietnam, its output mainly supplies Vietnam's domestic manufacturing industry while also reaching overseas markets in ASEAN, South Asia, and beyond. The project has effectively filled Vietnam's gap in high-end steel production capacity, significantly reduced the region's reliance on steel imports, and stands as a landmark project in Southeast Asia's steel industry layout as well as in the overseas expansion of Chinese metallurgical technology.
